Slow Cooker Bone Broth and It’s Benefits

Nutritious and wholesome homemade slow cooker bone broth cannot be beat! Not only is bone broth packed full of protein and collagen but there are also so many health benefits to it as well! Bone broth promotes healing and gut health. Sip on broth or add it to your everyday cooking, bone broth is a great way to add extra vitamins and minerals to you and your families’ diets.

As I am slowly starting to transition into making more and more items in my pantry from scratch, I came across the obnoxious amount of broth that I keep stored in my pantry. I mean honestly, I put broth in all my recipes because I know there are so many added benefits to broth. However, I never thought about making it myself until I started researching and realized on how simple it was to make my own broth.

Like most of us, we get intimidated by cooking things from scratch. We all want to be Betty Crocker on the first try. If you ask my husband, I am still nothing close to Betty Crocker. He would tell you that I cook WAY to healthy.

What is bone broth?

Bone broth is a type of restorative medicne-like food that is full of crazy healing magic! If you are sick, bone broth will heal you, if you have joint issues, bone broth will heal you, if you want better skin, hair and nails, bone broth will fix that!

Bone broth is a liquid that is made from any animal’s bones and joints (like necks, feet and knuckles), that is simmered in water for a long period of time. You can use any type of animal to make broth. The most common is beef, pork, chicken, and turkey. It is also very common to boil the broth with vegetables, herbs and spices to add more flavor. You also add in apple cider vinegar to help break down the protein and pull out all of the nutrients in the broth.

Difference between bone broth and stock

The difference between bone broth and stock is that bone broth you use everything. The tissue, the bones and the joints. Bone broth you cook for 36-48 hours whereas stock you only use the bones, and you cook for 1-6 hours.

What are the health benefits to bone broth?

I LOVE TALKING HEALTH BENEFITS TO FOODS. I don’t think people realize the benefits in the little things we eat. That is why it is so so important to eat clean, wholesome, and raw foods! The benefits in bone broth are

  • Helps with gut health.

  • Improves sleep.
  • Improves weight loss.
  • Helps fight inflammation.

How to make bone broth

Making bone broth is so simple. You will need the following ingredients to make broth:

  • Bones: I use able 2 LBS of bones (turkey, beef, pork, or chicken)
  • Connective tissues– Use all their tissues, joints, ribs, and oxtails
  • Vegetables– you can use onions, carrots, or celery
  • Seasonings- Garlic, ginger, or bay leaves
  • Apple Cider Vinegar

Equipment

The great things about making bone broth is that you do not need much equipment!

Storage

Now I usually store mine in glass jars and stored in the freezer. The jars that I like to use are linked in the equipment section! I like to fill them half full so there is room to expand.

You can also can them if you would like!

Tips!

Don’t use to much water: You just want to add enough water to cover the bones and the vegetables. You want your broth thick not watery and diluted.

Save the fat layer: On the top layer of your broth you will get a layer of fat. There are so many health benefits in that layer of fat and also it helps your broth stay clear rather than muddy.
